Have a Heart Wal-Mart
About a week ago i was walking out of a Wal-Mart in Petoskey Michigan. Like any other day in Northern Michigan in February, it was a cold blustering day. Just the night before the area received a fresh coat of freezing rain followed by a few inches of fresh snow. The single digit temperatures felt much colder with the winter wind coming in off lake Michigan. I was walking out of Wal-Mart when i seen a man struggling to push about fifteen shopping carts through the messy parking lot. He must have been in his fortys at least. He was bundled up as much as he could be while wearing this very demeaning orange safety vest. As he fought so hard to get a footing on the ice and slush, two smug upper level Wal-Mart associates were walking past him. They were dressed in their suit and ties with long trench coats and scarves. As they approached their "fellow" Wal-Mart associate they told him to stop what he was doing to pick up some shopping carts that were laid on their side to mark a specific area that was a risk hazard for slipping. The two men, maybe in their late twenty's, decided not to help this older man push in the long line of carts, instead they decided to get a good chuckle at telling this man to pick up two carts they could have easily done themselves. Now i do not know what decisions this cart pusher made in life to bring him to where is was that day. Maybe he was once like the two Wal-Mart executive, and lost his job. Perhaps he was just one semester away in college from getting a degree, but lost his funding for school. It is bad enough this man has to work for mere peanuts in such elements while the top executive receive millions of dollars a year. All i am saying is when did society decide it was better to walk past a person who needs help rather than lend that helping hand. And shame on Wal-Mart for letting this type of attitude amongst the various "class's" within its organization persist. To bad Wal-Mart has wiped out all the competition in town. I for one would just love to shop some where else.
